The most common fuel used by General Aviation aircraft, 100LL, is one of the few remaining fuels containing lead, with “LL” standing for “Low Lead”. This has led to environmental concerns globally due to the environmental and human risk by airborne and ground emissions.
In response to these concerns, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) created EAGLE or Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions. The goal of this group is to work with industry to find alternative fuels for General Aviation, with the goal to eliminated leaded aviation fuels in piston powered aircraft by 2030.
COPA is a member of EAGLE and attends the regularly held meetings. Once a US solution is determined, and the solution is eventually adopted in Canada, COPA remains engaged to ensure that this change comes with little to no cost to the end user and that airports across Canada are prepared for the transition to the new fuel type. More information on EAGLE can be found here.
