World Aeronautical Charts Discontinued

Nav Canada will be discontinuing the production of World Aeronautical Charts (WACs) and withdrawing the existing inventory from sale effective September 23, 2010, at which time these charts will no longer be authorized for operational use.

The decision to discontinue the production and sale of WACs follows the completion of an Aeronautical Study in 2009.

WAC’s are the subject of limited demand and increasing production costs. Other aeronautical information products are available that provide the detailed information needed to safely navigate Canadian airspace and better meet flight planning requirements.

VFR Navigational charts, with a scale of 1:500,000 provide full Canadian coverage and include much more detailed topographical and aeronautical information than WACs with a scale of 1:1,000,000.

For the complex airspace surrounding busy airports, VFR Terminal Area charts, with a scale of 1:250,000 provide the detail needed to fly VFR in these areas.

Customers should cease use of WACs as an official Aeronautical Information product and refer instead to VFR Navigational (VNC) charts and VFR Terminal Area (VTA) charts. Charts can be ordered by contacting Nav Canada Aeropubs or an authorized distributor.

Changes to the Canada Flight Supplement and the Canadian Forces Flight Supplement Section B (Aerodrome Reference) and Section C, Planning Section (VFR Chart Updating Data) to reflect the discontinuance of WACs will be made over several publications cycles.

The Canada Water Aerodrome Supplement will be updated at its next publication.

Questions or requests to purchase charts can be made to: Nav Canada Aeropubs 1-866-731-PUBS (7827) or aeropubs@navcanada.ca
