A Toronto man who is now living in Paris has started a GoFundMe campaign to cover $2,750 in fines he’ll face for flying a drone over the massive celebration for the Toronto Raptors NBA Championship win earlier this year. Toby Gu stepped forward as the rogue drone pilot who captured widely distributed video of the celebration after the winning game on June 13 and four days later at the public celebration. He told the CBC at the time he didn’t believe he was endangering anyone. He was, however, violating the CARS and busting restricted airspace.

Transport Canada announced last week that it had fined an individual a total of $2,750 for 11 separate infractions relating to the Raptor drone flights. TC had imposed flight restrictions over the celebrations and the drone flights violated numerous sections of recently-enacted drone rules. “Operating a drone in Canadian airspace is a regulated activity and the department will enforce the regulations to ensure compliance. The safety of Canadians is our number one priority,” Transport Minister Marc Garneau said in a news release. TC didn’t name Gu but he told the CBC he’s assuming he’s the one being fined. “I suspect the fine is meant for me but I have not been served with anything.”
