Okotoks Air Ranch Airport to Recommence Airport Operations Close collaboration with Transport Canada and airport stakeholders over the past year proves successful with airport set to re-open on May 6, 2017.

The skies around the Ranchers’ Rise community in the NE corner of Okotoks will get busy again as the Okotoks Air Ranch Airport re-opens to aircraft operations on May 6th, 2017.
On April 18, 2016, Okotoks Air Ranch Airport (CFX2) voluntarily surrendered its operating certificate to Transport Canada officials. Since then airport management has worked with Transport Canada to identify and complete the necessary steps to maintain public and aviation safety and to meet Transport Canada operating standards. This ensures compliance to the various regulations that govern any certified airport.

Much has changed since the Okotoks Air Ranch was born in 1999 with the vision of a residential community with an aerodrome as its central feature. On June 1, 2007, the status of the facility was raised from “aerodrome” to “airport”. Town growth, a sharp increase in residential development surrounding the airport, and the continuing evolution of aviation regulations governing certified airports changed the operational demands for CFX2.

Trent Obrigewitsch, the new airport manager, sees an exciting future for Okotoks Air Ranch Airport. Population growth of Okotoks, Calgary and the surrounding area have influenced the strong growth of Calgary International and the Springbank Airport. Today there is a growing demand for a regional facility like Okotoks Air Ranch Airport with its proximity to Calgary’s southern communities making it increasingly appealing. Obrigewitsch has been fielding calls lately from pilots and small businesses interested in relocating to Okotoks or having access to the Okotoks Airport. “The changes we have implemented at CFX2 have added to the viability of this airport – no question,” says Obrigewitsch.

Installation of a card lock fuel facility is underway to serve air traffic and aircraft returning to CFX2; the airport is also investigating the potential for a future Eco-tourism helicopter base and aircraft maintenance base facilities onsite. A grand airport reopening event is being planned for Saturday, June 17th to coincide with the Father’s Day weekend.
