Transport Canada recently announced the awarding of grants to Williams Lake airport in British Columbia (CYWL) and Sarnia airport in Ontario (CYXZ).

The Williams Lake Regional Airport will receive $1,498,181 for the installation of new runway edge lighting on Runway 11-29, Taxiway A and the apron, as well as for the replacement of airfield guidance signs, windsocks and the airport’s beacon.

“Our Government recognizes that local airports are major contributors to the economic growth and social well-being of smaller communities. In addition to supporting travel and tourism, local airports are key connectors for business, health care, social services, and emerging resource development sectors. These investments will improve access to safe, efficient and accessible air transportation options, and will help us deliver on our promise to build safer, healthier and stronger communities across Canada,” said Minister of Transport Marc Garneau.

Sarnia’s Chris Hadfield Airport will receive $583,665 for the re-asphalting of Taxiway B and part of the main apron and the upgrading of airfield guidance signs that lead to Runway 15-33 and Taxiway B.

“The Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport is an important hub for residents and businesses in this region. This investment will help ensure continued safe and reliable airport operations for Sarnia residents, many of whom depend on their local airports not only for personal travel and business, but also for access to specialized and emergency medical care in larger centres,” said London West MP Kate Young.

On September 18, 2018, Carter Mann, COPA’s Director of Government Affairs, presented an economic impact study and spoke to several local issues regarding airport infrastructure. This was in response to Sarnia’s efforts to develop a 20-year strategic plan.
